Classification of Internal combustion-IC- Engine |
Internal combustion engines can be classified into the various several grounds. Here classified internal combustion engines that depend on the different types of categories that are, type of fuel, combustion, Number of strokes, number of cylinders, Ignition system, cooling system, the cycle of combustion, cylinder arrangements, below discussed the complete latest classification of internal combustion engine one has to be well versed with engine classification.
1. Classification of IC engines based on the type of fuel used
(a). Engines using volatile liquid fuels
like gasoline, benzene, kerosene, alcohol, etc.
(b). Engines using gaseous fuels
like the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), like Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), the blast furnace gas, and the Biogas.
(c). Engines using solid fuels
like charcoal powdered coal etc
(d). Engines using viscous liquids fuels
like heavy and light diesel oils.
(e). Engines using two fuels
2. Classification of IC engines based on the method of charging
(a). Naturally aspirated engines
A naturally aspirated engine is an internal combustion engine in which oxygen intake depends solely on atmospheric pressure and does not rely on forced induction through a turbocharger or a supercharger. So many sports cars especially use the naturally aspirated engines to avoid the turbo lag.
(b). Supercharged engines
A supercharger is an air compressor that increases the pressure or density of air supplied to an internal combustion engine. This gives each intake cycle of the engine more oxygen, letting it burn more fuel and do more work, thus increasing power.
3 Classification of IC engines based on the type of ignition
(a). Battery Ignition system
In a battery ignition system, a battery is used to provide energy for ignition. It works as a storage of energy and charged by a dynamo, which is driven by an engine. It converts chemical energy into electric energy.
Two types of battery used in the spark ignition system, lead-acid battery, an alkaline battery. The first one is used in light-duty commercial vehicles and the other one is used in heavy-duty commercial vehicles. It is housed on the primary side of the ignition coil.
Compression ignition (C.I.)
(b) Compression ignition (C.I.) engine: In this type of engine, the fuel gets ignited as it comes in contact with the hot compressed air.
(b). Magneto Ignition system
A magneto is a small electric generator that is rotated by the engine and is capable of produce a very high voltage and does not need a battery as a source of external energy.
The magneto contains both primary and secondary winding thus it does not require a separate coil to boost up the voltage required to operate the spark plug.
4. Classification of IC engine based on the type of cooling
(a). Air cooled engines
Air-cooled engines rely on the circulation of air directly over hot parts of the engine to cool them.
(b). Water-cooled engines
Water cooling is a method of heat removal from components and industrial equipment. This is As opposed to the air cooling, and water is used as the heat conductor of the heating body. Commonly water cooling is used for cooling internal combustion engines (ICE).
